FAQs

What is Beam?

^

Beam is a social enterprise that can crowdfund the costs of landing a job and support you into stable, paid work.

If you're new to crowdfunding, it simply means a group of people raising money online for a cause - e.g. in Beam's case, quality employment training for people who have experienced or are at risk of homelessness.

It's safe and easy for members of the public to support your campaign.

People can also send a message of encouragement when donating to a campaign, becoming part of your new support network.

What can Beam fund?

^

Beam can help fund items that are useful to you starting a new job including:

Training courses
A laptop
Internet access
Childcare
Travel costs
Equipment
Clothing

What jobs can Beam help you start?

^

Beam's goal is to help you find stable, secure work!

We have lots of great partnerships with companies. Beam have helped people start work with organisations including the NHS, Ocado, Transport for London and Lidl - just to name a few!

Here's a list of job areas that Beam can help you start work in:

Care
Support Work
Warehouse Operations
Construction
Admin
Childcare
Security
Teaching Assistant
Cleaning
Facilities Assistant

Does it cost anything to join Beam?

^

Beam's support is completely free! You don't need to pay us back for what we fund for you at any point.

With the items purchased with your Beam funds, we just expect you to take responsibility for and look after these, such as laptops, equipment and travel cards.

Once you’re in work, you can also choose to contribute to new Beam campaigns to help others like yourself, but you don't have to do this. This is optional!

How do I know if I'm eligible for Beam's support?

^

Currently, Beam can offer our support to individuals who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or have been homeless in the past year. This includes:

• Affected by the benefit cap
• Asked to leave your current home
• In rent arrears
• In unsuitable housing
• Night shelters
• Rough sleeping
• Sofa-surfing

You'll also need to be 'attached' to a local authority who Beam work with.

I don't want to use a photo - is that possible?

Making sure you feel comfortable when working with Beam is one of our biggest priorities.

If you think your safety would be at risk by having a campaign on Beam, we can create an ‘anonymous’ profile for you instead - like Juliet, who has an anonymous page, which you can see here.

This never impacts the funding you receive through Beam. We only use first names and there’s always the option to use a different name to your own, whether or not you have an anonymous profile. Please speak to your Beam caseworker if this is something you’re concerned about.

Finally, we never share any traceable information online - including where you live, your surname, where you study or your place of work - regardless of whether you are anonymous or not.
